I’m thinking of starting a meme just to see how far it would go. But more importantly, I want to read what my online buddies (the online buddies of my online buddies, and the online buddies of the online buddies of — you know the rest!) have to say about it.
“Count Your Blessings” as I know it, is best known as the hymn written in the 19th century. I like how this one verse goes:
Are you ever burdened with a load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear? Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly. And you will keep singing as the days go by.
So, here I am, seated in front of my computer, trying to count my blessings (but trying not to sing!). Well, actually, this is just a continuation. I’ve been counting my blessings since yesterday whilst I was walking the streets of Makati City. Why? No apparent reason. I just want to acknowledge the goodness of God in my life, despite the loneliness I’m feeling, and the way life seems to treat us unfairly sometimes. :)
My Top 5 Intangible Blessings:
- My mom’s arrival in Manila very, very soon. Our being together again is a great Mothers’ Day gift. Well, for her. For me, it’s just a “gift”.
- My dad’s slow but steady recovery from a serious lung ailment. My dad’s been smoking since the age of 14. He’s now 52 years old. You do the math.
- My older brother’s regularization, and my other older brother’s promotion. I know these are hardly things to be included in such a personal list as this, but you see, my brothers are undergraduates. So, really, for them to actually progress professionally in two reputable companies (respectively) is an amazing accomplishment. I know it doesn’t show much, but I’m very happy for them.
- A new job for me which promises to be exciting, and a bunch of potential rakets (that I’m praying will push through). Let’s see what happens there.
- A newfound hobby which, on the other hand, promises to be rewarding. Let’s see what happens there too. Haha
From the looks of it, my top 5 blessings are mostly about my family (That’s just items 1-3. Items 4-5 are just consolations). We’ve come a long way from being in a very bad situation to being, at the very least, just okay. And I think that fact clearly proves God’s faithfulness. We’re one of the most imperfect, grumpy, often-disagreeing-with-one-another families, but we’ve managed to make it through. My mom is the perfect example of someone who’s gone through a lot of trials but still remains strong for all of us, and I think our “being just okay” is mostly due to her fervent, pray-without-ceasing kind of faith. She’s my super-mom. :)
Now I’m inviting some friends and online buddies to count and share their blessings: Ganns, Romzkee, Sarah, Bheng, Reah, Riz, Jireh, Aiai, Mae, Gean, and Michelle.
Count your blessings instead of your crosses;
Count your gains instead of your losses.
Count your joys instead of your woes;
Count your friends instead of your foes.
Count your smiles instead of your tears;
Count your courage instead of your fears.
Count your full years instead of your lean;
Count your kind deeds instead of your mean.
Count your health instead of your wealth;
Love your neighbor as much as yourself.
